'Life' is defined for any particle,substance or object as anything which is not dead.

This definition is too broad and not very accurate. For example, water is not alive but it is also not dead, while a rock is not alive nor dead. A better definition for life is the presence of characteristics such as metabolism, reproduction, growth and response to stimuli.
